Skate4Concrete Competition Guidelines & Parameters

The final module of the S4C curriculum encourages student teams to build their own miniature concrete skateparks. We hope that you will choose your top student team to enter our S4C Mini Concrete Skatepark Competition. It will be hosted on April 11th, 2025 at Middle Tennessee State University and will be coupled with a tour of the Concrete Industry Management program. After last year's competition, we are excited to see what you guys come up with!

Here are the parameters for this year's competition so that you can be preparing throughout this semester. We are purposefully keeping the skatepark parameters to a minimum to give students the freedom to be creative with their design.

For this competition, student teams will be given scores based on their performance in three aspects of competition; (1) their physical concrete skateparks that they will design, build, and present, (2) their three minute presentations where the team will talk in depth about their design process, construction process, and any noteworthy experiences/challenges they faced during the different stages of the project. Teams may receive bonus points for discussing any important, current concrete industry issues/topics. Finally, (3) is the Concrete Quiz Bowl. Students teams will be asked to work together and answer 10 concrete questions that will be pulled from the S4C curriculum. There will be a time limit to answer each question and each question will have a fill in the blank answer. No multiple choice this time!

Here are the specific parameters for each of the 3 aspects of competition:

  • Physical Skatepark Parameters
    • Skatepark dimensions must not exceed 32” long x 32” wide x 16” tall
    • Skateparks must be constructed using a concrete material (like what you will find in the kits we provide) as a main component of the skatepark, specifically where the skaters would be riding. Feel free to be creative when using other materials to “dress up” your skatepark, if desired (benches, trees, grass, paint etc).
    • Skateparks will be judged on the following criteria for a total of 10 points obtainable:
      • Overall Design/appearance - 3 points
      • Creativity - 2 points
      • Quality of Finish Surface of Concrete - 3 points
      • Use of decorative accessories - 2 points
  • 3 Minute Presentations
    • The objective of the presentations is to discuss in depth about their skatepark. Specifically about the design process, construction process, and any noteworthy experiences/challenges they faced during the different stages of the project. Teams may receive bonus points for discussing any important, current concrete industry issues/topics.
    • Presentations will be judged on the following criteria for a total of 10 points obtainable:
      • Finishing within the time limit - 1 point
      • Clarity/conciseness of presenters - 2 points
      • Presenters enthusiasm for their topic  - 2 points
      • Quality Content and objectives clearly presented - 3 points
      • Shared speaking time among teammates - 1 point
      • Discussing important, current concrete industry issues/topics - 1 point
  • Concrete Quiz Bowl
    • Will consist of 10 concrete related questions that will be pulled directly from the Skate4Concrete curriculum
    • All 10 questions will be fill in the blank, no multiple choice!
    • There will be a set time to answer the questions. After the time is up, no more answers can be given.
    • Each question answered correctly will be worth 1 point for a total of 10 points obtainable.
